The primary duty of a *Veterinary Technician* is to assist and support the veterinarian in providing preventative, medical, and surgical care to the patients of the hospital and communicate information regarding treatments and care to the clients.
*Job Duties:* * Assist veterinarian in diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures using radiography, blood analyzer equipment, ultrasonography, and other equipment * Perform lab work via routine in-clinic hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, fecal analysis, and cytology diagnostic tests as directed by supervising veterinarian or prepare sample for submission to reference laboratory * Efficiently work with computers and office equipment and the following sample list of medical tools and equipment: Lab equipment, sterilizers, anesthesia and oxygen, X-ray, ultrasound, endotracheal tubes, syringes/needles, catheters, microscopes, electrolyte machine, ultrasonic cleaner, etc.
* Educate clients on preventative health care, common disease conditions, medication administration, and dietary/preventative products sold in clinic and through our online pharmacy * Perform surgery discharge with client via written discharge instructions and go over medications, address client questions * Triage emergent/urgent cases vs routine cases and communicate to the veterinarian on duty * Safely restrain patients using techniques to reduce the patient’s stress level * Perform routine venipuncture, cystocentesis (when indicated), and collect urine/fecal samples for diagnostic testing * Dispense and administer medications, vaccinations, and other treatments under direction of veterinarian * Take and process radiographs, submit images to outside radiology service for consultation when directed * Perform manual complete blood cell count/blood smear review with differential * Perform skin and ear cytology, including quantification of organisms found * Perform urine microscopic sedimentation exam * Perform analysis of blood smears when needed * Prepare surgery patients, instruments, and equipment for surgery * Clean and sterilize equipment per protocol * Support veterinarian by passing and holding tools and performing all necessary assisting activities * Place IV catheters * Administer oral, subcutaneous, and IV medications under direction of veterinarian * Administer and monitor anesthesia under direction of veterinarian, record vital signs on anesthetic record per clinic protocol * Provide nursing care for any injured, ill, or post-surgical patients * Perform routine dental prophylaxis including accurate dental charting * Perform full mouth dental radiograph series on dog and cat * Maintain accurate patient medical records and invoices * Perform routine maintenance on surgical, anesthetic, and other equipment to maintain good working order * Monitor and stock inventory and supplies throughout the clinic * Complete daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning list items with other staff * Ability to work a rotated on-call schedule including weekends and holidays *Qualifications:* * Excellent verbal communication skills, including ability to teach and demonstrate care skills to coworkers while working * Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to develop effective relationships with clients and coworkers * Basic math skills (for calculating doses, weights, and performing other care-related fee calculations) * Effective writing skills for documenting in charts, communicating with clients, and coworkers * Able to multi-task, prioritize, and effectively perform duties in a frequently fast-paced and sometimes stressful work environment * Possess strong organizational skills and good attention to detail * Maintain professional composure when working with critically injured or ill patients as well as distraught or disgruntled clientele * Follow and hold others accountable to all federal and state animal health laws and regulations DEA and OSHA safety protocols required in a veterinary clinic, including the appropriate handling and disposal of hazardous waste * Work as an effective and proactive team-player; understand the importance of supporting the clinic and coworkers * Understand confidential nature of organization information and maintain confidentiality with patient, client, organization, and coworker information *Physical Requirements:* * Hear and speak fluently (for telephone use and to communicate with people inside and outside the clinic) * Stand or be on feet and mobile around hospital for long stretches throughout an 8–10-hour workday * Move quickly when in an urgent/emergent situation, including chasing after and restraining small and large animals (weighing up to 150 lbs.
) in a safe and humane way * Lift supplies, equipment, and/or pets weight up to 50 lbs.
without assistance multiple times throughout the day, including to/from floor to table and for up to 75 feet (may use gurney/dolly if needed to move pet) * Walk safely while carrying an animal restrained in a carrier or walking a patient on a leash * Physically restrain large and small animals weighing up to 150 lbs.
* Twist, turn, bend, stoop, kneel, stand, walk, and reach frequently in the performance of responsibilities (including crouch, crawl, and kneel on hard surface flooring) * Apply manual dexterity and fine motor skills to handle and operate equipment, tools, syringes, computer, etc.
* Apply visual acuity to perform treatment, operate equipment, update charts, work on computer, etc.
